Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Opticon different to other studios?
Opticon is a creative studio ran by photographer Josh Thomas, whose work has been in the pages of Elle, Glamour, and more, as well as having shot fro brands like Coach, Saks Fifth, and has created work for Starbucks, Nike, and many more. Our equipment is top of the line, and all of our tools, clothing, and props that we’ve gathered from our shoots are available for you to use.
Opticon acts as a place to encourage you to get creative and advance your work. Utilize the space!
What are your normal hours of operation?
We are a 24 hour, 365 studio!
What DOES the name mean??
When I attended MICA (briefly) I was told I was “too visually oriented” for how I went about visually interpreting the song “Opticon” by Orgy. Yes, it is ironic. Yes, it’s a great song.
Are you available to photograph our event at Opticon?
Of course, barring my schedule, I’m always available to either shoot your event, or help train photographers as you shoot.
You build custom sets?
Yes! As the studio is ran by an editorial photographer, we’re constantly creating new sets, and offering renters the chance to shoot them as well. We’ve done holiday sets, glass rooms, and much more. We’re hoping Opticon Studios can be a place where photographers can get learn and inspire each other. If you have an idea, message us and see if we can help you build it! Also, stay up to date with what we have going on, as it can change weekly!
What props do you have?
We have a rotating amount of props. We aren’t a store, and we don’t have limited amounts of space, so we try to keep it spacious inside. However, we do have a knack for getting random items, so if there’s something you’d like, feel free to reach out to us and see if we can help you get it!
Our disco balls, vintage tripod lights, and furniture are mainstays.
Are there any Restrictions on what I can shoot at Opticon?
Nope! Shoot whatever you want, just keep the space clean, absolutely no sexual acts, and follow our rules.
Are there any hidden costs or fees?
Nope. We list our pricing for everything throughout the site, so please read everything, or just ask us before booking.
What equipment do you have at the studio for me to use?
We are a brand new studio, so we will be gradually increasing our inventory, but for now, you can see what’s included here.
What colors of seamless paper do you keep in stock?
We try to keep as many colors in stock as possible, so feel free to contact us at any time and ask directly. Generally, we keep the basics on hand all times.
We do charge a $15 fee when we have to cut our papers, if they touch the ground or are damaged. If you’re just standing in front of them, and not standing on them, then they’re all free to use! Remember these are expensive, and take a while to ship and refill our stock, so please be respectful.
You are also more than welcome to bring your own, if you have a color that we don’t.
What is your RESCHEDULING/cancellation policy?
Full refund if canceled at LEAST 24 hours before your scheduled time.
If canceled less than 24 hours before you’re booking time, we do charge a $50 cancelation fee.
Can I bring outside equipment?
You’re free to bring pretty much whatever you want. We have large doors and stairwells, as well as a freight elevator.
Is there free parking?
Yes! Our studio is located in an in-development artist community that offers plenty of free parking in a private parking lot attached to the studio.
Is there food in the area?
We are only a few minutes from Fells Point, and various other populated areas with plenty of delivery options. Just please clean up after yourself.
Do you have a minimum booking time?
Yes, we require a minimum of 2 hours per rental. We do offer discounts for all day rentals.
Can I rent the studio for non-photography related events?
Of course! We actively encourage yoga enthusiasts to take advantage of the space, and are more than happy to have you host your events, workshops, etc here!
